Is it Better to Workout in the Morning or Evening?

fitness Jul 09, 2018

One of the questions I get asked a lot is, “Should I workout in the morning or evening?”.

There’s lots of benefits to both working out in the morning and working out in the evening. So what is the benefit of both?

Morning

A lot of people choose to work out in the morning for multiple reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that you’re able to get your workout out of the way and not have any excuses later in the day.

Not only will you walk away more energized but you will find yourself more focused and energized for work for the rest of the day.

On top of that, those who work out in the morning tend to make healthier food choices throughout the day.

It’s also shown that working out in the morning boosts your metabolism, allowing you to burn more calories throughout the day.

And who doesn’t love a good night's sleep? Well working out will help you get that.

It helps your body power down in the evening and can even lower your blood pressure, allowing you to fully rest up and get a better quality of sleep.

But let’s be honest here, getting up early to go to the gym can be hard for some.

Evening

So what are the perks of working out in the evening?

Some people are not morning people and don’t get their energy til later in the day.

On top of that, you’re actually about 20% more flexible later in the day since you’ve worked your muscles while being up and about all day.

It’s also known that people who go to the gym after work tend to work out harder.

You’re able to use your food throughout the day to give you enough energy to get that workout in. Plus it’s one of the best ways to destress after a long day.

Hey, it’ll also help you sleep better at night too. So really working out is an overall win/win for your sleep schedule.

Here's a little tip if you're still having a hard time deciding which is best for you:

A lot of people will do their cardio in the morning because it's been shown to burn more fat whereas working out at night is more for strength and muscle building because you have more energy to push yourself harder.

Another thing to keep in mind when you're deciding when to workout is finding a time where you can fuel your body right after as well.

So if you have enough time to workout and eat a good breakfast after, then maybe mornings are your go-to. If you rather workout and eat dinner right after, then evenings are a better fit for you.

Fueling your body after your workout is just as important as the actual workout if not more! Overall, you really can’t go wrong and it’s truly whatever works for your schedule.

What do you prefer? A morning or evening workout and why?
